I thought I would invest more money into a pepper mill as I have purchased others in the past for less money but find that I replace them in about eighteen months. This product advertises that the blades are guaranteed for twenty-five years. So I figured that paying over $54 for a pepper mill that looks beautiful "in the photo at least" and that would last me for more than two decades was worth the expense.
My gripe:
1) This German pepper mill does dispense freshly ground pepper to varying degrees of fineness but the handle is so short that I find it awkward to spin the handle liberally and with ease. I find I have to continually go in reverse (just slightly) and then go in the right direction to grind fresh pepper. I believe if the handle were a tad longer that this would alleviate the lack of fluidity when it comes to turning the grinder.
2) I did not expect this grinder to have any peppercorns as it did not state anywhere that it would have any. When I opened the box the pepper mill itself was covered in ground pepper which made me very unimpressed. Most pepper mills package peppercorns in plastic to prevent this mess from happening. In addition, there were only enough peppercorns to fill the inside of the mill about one fourth of the way. I found it odd that it was not completely full.
3) My biggest gripe is that there are flaws in the craftsmanship of the plastic black top. In the photo on the box the steel handle that inserts vertically into the black plastic top and what you see are clean lines that appear to have German precision and high quality. But that is not the case upon close inspection of my actual pepper mill. The plastic that butts to the edge of the metal handle is jagged, uneven and does NOT look anything like the quality found in the photo. In addition, there are two small gouges in the actual plastic handle. Upon closer inspection I see scratches on both the metal portion and plastic portion of the top.
Seeing as how the peppercorns were all over the place along with finely ground pepper scattered inside the packaging AND the scratches and gouges I am quick to assume that I have been sold a used (and slightly abused) product. The poor craftsmanship that contradicts what the photo displays is false advertising. When I saw the phrase "Made in Germany" I thought I could expect precision. After my experience I will never make that assumption about products made in Germany in the future. I am reluctant to request a replacement as I fear that I will experience the same lack of quality. It is unfortunate to say the least. Here I thought I was buying myself an Arne Jacobsen looking pepper mill (whose design style I love, by the way). However, I am very displeased and very aggravated that I will have to endure the imposition of traveling to my nearest post office to return this piece of garbage. I would not even want this if it were given to me for free. The pepper mills I see at Target may not last for twenty-five years but I have yet to stumble upon one that is packaged poorly, scratched up and looks like it was poorly and unacceptably made by hand. This experience has soured me.

Zassenhaus began in 1867 as an export store supplying small steel goods and hand tools. Then in 1904, the foundation for the future success was laid with the introduction of pepper mills. In 2000 Zassenhaus invented the first continuously adjustable grinding mechanism made from high quality German ceramic. Zassenhaus products are distinctive and unique and solidify our position as the leading supplier of premium spice and coffee mills. A mill is as good as its grinding mechanism as this alone determines how much flavor and aroma is released when the spices are ground. Zassenhaus patented German ceramic mechanism is for peppercorns, sea salt, spices and dried herbs. Each mill features six different adjustments from rough to fine grind. Heidelberg is a modern interpretation of the classic crank-top pepper mill, now in gleaming 18/10 stainless steel with sleek black accents. Inside you'll find Zassenhaus' patented CeraPlus(R) German ceramic grinding mechanism that's actually harder than carbon steel, and guaranteed for 25 years of flawless service. To grind, simply turn the crank. A 6-position dial on the bottom lets you adjust the fineness or coarseness of the grind. To fill, simply tip the top off. 6.3-inch tall.
