(More customer reviews)My wife and I have had several cheap pepper mills in the past which performed poorly or broke, and we wanted a quality item that would last for a long time. I did a lot of research before purchasing this pepper mill. I had several criteria:
-Grind adjustment must be separate from turning mechanism
-Grinding mechanism should be made from rust-free material
-Mill must be able to hold a lot of peppercorns
-Mill must be readily cleanable
I was initially torn between the Peugeot, Unicorn, and Zassenhaus pepper mills. The Unicorn Magnum has received great reviews, but I am not enthusiastic about the device being constructed from plastic. I believe that wooden peppermills retain the pepper aromas and provide a better tasting pepper over time. The Peugeot mills had mixed reviews, so I was a bit wary of their quality. I ended up purchasing the Zassenhaus pepper mill even though it only had one review at the time. Zassenhaus only makes grinders - so I believed they'd make a good product.
Pros:
-The ceramic grinding mechanism is wonderful. The grinding action is smooth and easy whether you're grinding coarse or fine pepper.
-The adjustment mechanism is very good. It is on the bottom of the mill, and you simply adjust a knob to one of six positions. It remains in that position solidly until it is changed, and adjustments of the mechanism are smooth.
-The beech hardwood used to make the mill seems to be very high quality.
-Different heights available to suit
-25 year warranty, though I've no experience with their customer service
Cons:
-The dark finish is not my favorite. It is a satin, grayish brown that is between light and dark. I would probably get the natural finish instead.
-The knob that holds the top on loosens slightly over time. This is only a minor inconvenience as it doesn't adjust the grind size or difficulty.
All in all, it seems like an excellent product. If you don't mind plastic grinders, I'd probably buy the Unicorn Magnum for its features; however, if you want a wooden mill, the Zassenhaus should be your first choice.
