This review is only for the Planetary Design 32oz Table Top Stainless Steel French Press in Mocha. I cannot vouch for any other Planetary Design product.
Okay - so like most probably reading this I am a researcher. I tend to like to see real world users and what they think about a product rather then all the mindless marketing hype companies push out.
I don't think I'd put myself in the coffee connoisseur category but in life there are just a few things you can't skimp on and one of them is coffee. So when I initially started looking into getting a coffee press I kept seeing Bodium as the dominant product on the market but then I started digging in a little and reading how their product appears to have gone down hill and that people are tasting PLASTIC in their coffee?! That is simply not acceptable and in my humble opinion a potential long-term health hazard. And it seems that most others I came across either break quickly, the plunger guts don't last, or are not very sturdy when you push the plunger down and people have gotten burned from spilling hot coffee. Also unacceptable.
So I came across Planetary Design and at first I'll say I was a bit hesitant mainly because there didn't appear to be too many people who had actually tried the thing out and written reviews. Well don't let that scare you off. In a nutshell, without a doubt, based on 3 full 32oz uses so far, this thing rocks! It is sturdy, kept my coffee warm for at least 3 hours, and even to the last pour I still haven't gotten a ground in my java with a medium grind from an inexpensive burr grinder (don't do the blade - just don't...).
On a side note. The first one I got was damaged - big dent in the bottom. That was a bummer but after I reached out to LPD online they contacted me that same day and had a new one out in 2 business days Fed-ex with a return shipping label for the damaged one on their dime. Sure it would have been nice to not have to deal with getting the new one and the return, blah blah blah, but my guess is it wasn't their fault based on how customer service responded (email, phone, and as stated above).
Alright nough said... for those looking for the better mouse trap - you found it with this unit.
